Summertime, and the living is easy–unless of course you have to play UEFA Cup qualifiers, follow MLS or (in this instance) make restitution for not putting together a Top 25 list in many months. But now is the perfect time to take a long, last look at last season’s top clubs. Except, we didn’t feel a Top 25 was sufficient. Instead, behold the first ever Soccer Source Top 50:

1. Manchester United
This one is obviously a no-brainer. The back-to-back Premiership champs put the cherry on top of the whipped cream that was a stellar 2007-08 campaign by beating Chelsea in the Champions League final. As deserving a number one as might be imagined, though one title short of the elusive treble. There’s always next year…

2. Real Madrid
The Spanish champions had another superb season, but an early exit from the Copa del Rey coupled with Champs League elimination at the hands of AS Roma were disappointments. Still, Roma was in peak form when they faced Bernd Schuster’s side, who were short-handed by injuries (van Nistelrooy, Robben) and yellow card bans (Sergio Ramos) to key players. And Roma’s 2-1 victory in the first leg was about as lucky as they come.

3. Chelsea
What’s this? A top five team that didn’t win any silverware? Believe it. Blues were one John Terry fowl-up away from taking home the biggest trophy of them all and lost the League Cup match to Spurs in overtime. Avram Grant’s former side also came back to contend with Man. Utd in the Premiership–a campaign where they lost only three games all season (two fewer than the team that won the league). Besides the obvious blemish of not winning any trophies, Chelsea’s critics on the ranking committee can also point to the fact that the team’s European campaign did not feature clubs that were widely-considered among the continent’s elite this season: Valencia, Schalke and Rosenborg Trondheim in the group stage, Olympiakos, Fenerbahce and Liverpool in the elimination stages. Would Chelsea have advanced to the final had they faced, say, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan or Roma? Impossible to say, of course, but they almost definitely would have had a harder time of it.

4. Inter Milan
Another selection sure to arouse criticism (then again, which one won’t besides the first one?). The Italian champions had a miserable second half of their campaign; when they played Liverpool in the Champs League elimination round, Reds were on the brink of the abyss with Rafa Benitez’ neck firmly on the chopping block. That Inter were unable to even score one goal in their two games with Scousers was a disappointment of immense proportions. So too was their skid in Serie A, a campaign they appeared to dominate at will in the first half of the season. Yet the nerrazurri did salvage the Scudetto title and for that they are deserving of a top five spot.

5. AS Roma
The Serie A campaign fell short on the last match day but the rossoneri were able to win the Coppa Italia. Their campaign in Europe was solid as well (though as previously noted, they were more lucky than good at times).

6. Olympique Lyon
The serial champions of France’s Ligue Un had one of the toughest domestic campaigns in recent memory. The seven losses in league play are the most since the 2003/04 season. But l’OL added the French cup trophy this weekend, defeating embattled rivals Paris SG in overtime to complete the domestic double (the first time in 35 years that they won the cup). Alain Perrin’s side also survived a tough Champs League group with Barca, Rangers and VfB Stuttgart and even matched wits with Man U. for periods of their elimination match-up, losing the series on one goal. With Karim Benzema, Lyon has a bonafide superstar and one of the very best forwards in the game. Benzema recently signed an extension with the team through 2013. If he stays even half that, l’OL will make their mark in Europe, perhaps even with a run for the Champions League title.

7. Arsenal London
For a long time it looked as though Arsene Wenger’s young squad was poised for Premiership (and perhaps even continental) glory. Then they started to show their age, were eliminated from the CL by Liverpool and dropped out of the Premiership race.

8. FC Porto
The Dragons ran away with the bwinLIGA and for a little while looked like they might be poised to repeat their historic run from 2004. Alas, the Champions League campaign ended in disappointment, with a loss on penalties to Schalke 04 in the first elimination round. The domestic double campaign fell short as well, with a loss to Sporting Lisbon in the finals of the Taca de Portugal.

9. Olympiakos Piraus
The Greek club took a domestic double, winning the Super League and Kypello Elladas and made a deep run in the Champions League, advancing out of a tough group (Lazio, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid) before bowing out to Chelsea. A solid choice to round out the top 10–but again, hardly one everybody will agree with. Fair enough. You’ve got better choices? Bring ‘em on!

10. Zenit St. Petersburg
The UEFA Cup Champs, and home to the most sought-after player in the world right now, came out of nowhere last season. The Soccer Source ranking committee barely took notice of the team that hails from the city formerly known as Leningrad. Shame on us. Along the road to UEFA Cup glory, Dick Advocaat’s side eliminated storied clubs Bayern Munich, Olympique Marseille and Villareal, to name but a few. That, and they also happened to win the Russian championships last December (Russia is one of those weird countries, like the U.S., where they play the soccer season from spring through fall. Freaks). This season, the club had a tough start to its domestic campaign but then sprung to life after the month-long Euro break. Just last weekend, they beat up on poor Tom Tomsk 5-1. Zenit is still in the lower reaches of the Russian league table, but has five (count ‘em) games in hand over the rest of the league (and they’ve only lost once in six matches).

11. Bayern Munich
At times this season Bayern looked like world beaters, even though they were not able to test themselves against the very best competition in the Champions League. In the end it was enough for the domestic double (Bundesliga and DFB Pokal). More will be revealed next year, when they will be in the Champions League, albeit with a new coach (Jurgen Klinsmann) and the weight of the world (or at least German) on their shoulders.

12. Liverpool
Few teams had as topsy-turvy a season as Liverpool. On the brink of disaster one moment (dropping points at home to Birmingham City and Wigan) and on top of the world the next (after ousting Inter Milan, considered at the time to be the best team in Europe, from the Champions League), the 2007/08 campaign had it all for Reds fans. When it was all said and done, Rafa Benitez’ squad finished fourth in the Premiership–good enough for automatic Champions League qualification next year.

13. Juventus
The blanconeri’s first season back in Serie A was a solid effort. Without European competition to distract it, Juve was free to focus on the domestic campaign. A third place finish, and Champions League qualification is the result of these efforts.

14. FC Barcelona
Mighty Barca this far down? Yes, ma’am. It was a season to forget in the Catalan capital city, with a semifinal appearance in the UEFA Champions League the sole bright spot. Frank Rijkaard’s (now former) side finished a distant third in the Primera Division and will have to qualify for the Champions League later this summer. That shouldn’t be a problem. Ronaldinho’s weight, on the other hand…

15. AC Milan
Talk about disappointing seasons. Milan’s lone bright spot in Paolo Maldini’s swan song season was December’s triumph in the Club World Cup. After finishing fifth in Serie A, the rossoneri will not even play in this year’s edition of the UEFA Champions League.

16. Villareal.
The yellow submarine had a successful UEFA Cup campaign, falling to eventual winners Zenit St. Petersburg on the away goals rule. Their domestic campaign was even more successful; Manuel Luis Pellegrini’s men finished second and qualify automatically for the Champs League.

17. Fenerbahce
Luis Aragones’ new club finished a disappointing second in the Turkish league to archrivals Galatasaray. So why are they this high up? Quality wins, baby: Inter Milan, PSV Eindhoven, Sevilla and Chelsea were all vanquished by the Istanbul side at one point last season. Did I mention they made it to the Champions League semifinals? They have to go through qualifiers to make it into the elite tourney this time around. I’m not a gambling man, but if I was, I wouldn’t bet against them making it.

18. Fiorentina
I’ll admit it was a very close call between Fiorentina and Sporting and the ultimate decision may have been influenced by the committee’s dislike of all things boring, a list where Italian soccer ranks very highly. Fiorentina finished fourth in Serie A, sneaking in to the last Champs League spot after an up and down campaign. La Viola’s UEFA Cup campaign was ultimately disappointing, ending as it did with a penalty shoot out in the semifinals to #14 Rangers. The team actually had very few “quality wins” last season (only Juventus and PSV Eindhoven if my research is correct) and their UEFA Cup play-in tie with Groningen went to penalties as well.

19. PSV Eindhoven
Besides winning the Dutch Eredivisie, PSV had a solid Champions League run, finishing third in a tough group that included Inter Milan and #18 Fener (whom they tied at home and lost to on the road). Had trouble with Spurs before bowing out to #19 Fiorentina.

20. Sporting Lisbon
Another team that didn’t get much love from the ranking committee, Sporting finished second in the tough Portuguese league, which is good enough for a Champions League spot. They’ve already pulled a quality transfer, acquiring Porto’s Helder Postiga. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. These are last season’s rankings after all. Sporting was a UEFA Cup quarterfinalist (losing to Rangers) and also happened to win the Portuguese cup (beating mighty Porto in overtime).

21. Atletico Madrid
An exciting squad that thrilled the ranking committee at times, only to disappoint at others. The good: beating Valencia, Barcelona and Sevilla. The bad: losing their UEFA Cup tie with Bolton. Yes, Bolton. But as the fourth-placed finishers in La Liga, Atletico get to try their hand at Champs League qualifiers. For the first time since 1996, which was so long ago the Champions League consisted only of actual champions! (True story, look it up or ask your grandparents or something). The rojiblancos are obviously taking the campaign seriously, having already signed French national goalkeeper Gregory Coupet, Florent Sinama Pongolle and the Czech Republic’s Tomas Ujfalusi. They’re also said to be in pursuit of David Silva. Keep an eye on these guys. They might just be very good.

22. FC Sao Paulo
The top South American team is one that did not even win any international trophies. It was ousted in the quarterfinals from both the Copa Sudamericana last fall the Copa Libertadores this spring (to Fluminense, who lost the finale to Quito). Still, Sao Paolo won the 2007 Brazilian league by 15 points has only lost once this season (on the first match day). Having deliberated the issue at length, the committee is confident this was the best team in South America the past 12 months.

23. Celtic Glasgow
Celtic had a solid run at Rangers in the SPL, ultimately falling short. Their Champions League campaign was superb, with wins over AC Milan and Benfica. They even matched wits with Barcelona for about half of the first leg of the quarterfinals. Well-deserved #23.

24. Glasgow Rangers
Alan Smith’s men came within two wins of a treble. Though they failed to make it out of a tough Champions League group, their ensuing UEFA Cup campaign was all the more impressive: Fiorentina, Sporting Lisbon and Werder Bremen were just three of the teams Rangers left beaten and bloodied by the side of the road.

25. LDU de Quito
The Ecuador side get the final spot in the first half of the table solely by virtue of their Copa Libertadores triumph. They did not go far in the Copa Sudamericana but currently sit second in their domestic league (which they won in 2007).

Since the IPL launched, a constant debate has gone on regarding the uniforms of the cheerleaders for the various clubs. The original uniforms, which mimicked American Football cheerleader’s uniforms, were deemed inappropriate by politicians and members of the media, who apparently are too uptight to enjoy the sight of a nearly naked woman gyrating in front of a cricket match. Finally, a uniform that the conservative politicians approve on has been established; Burkhas.

First, the cheerleaders were forced to dance in jogging pants and T-shirts, resembling someone who just got out of bed rather than entertainers, but even those costumes were deemed ‘too risqué’, as you could still make out the dancers’ wrists and necks, which was far too provocative.

The Burkhas solve this issue, allowing the spectators to only see the eyes of the cheerleaders. “We think this is more appropriate. Our children should not be subjected to the naked wrists of women dancing like whores at a family sporting event,” complained one politician. “And sure, a few of them will probably die from heat stroke every match, but at least we don’t risk seeing any skin.
Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel has been banned for two matches after being sent off during his side’s Group A 3-2 victory over Czech Republic.

Demirel was dismissed in stoppage time of Monday’s match after pushing Czech striker Jan Koller to the ground.

The Fenerbahce keeper will definitely miss their quarter-final against Croatia and also a potential semi-final against Germany or Portugal.

The Turkish FA was also fined £27,000 for improper conduct.

The fine related to the behaviour of their supporters, players and officials during the match, notably Demirel who sat on the bench after being sent off rather than leaving the technical area.

“We had some problems with some Turkish fans trying to enter the pitch, and also the presence of about 25 unaccredited people after the game in the Turkish dressing room,” UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said.

However, Gaillard added that no action could be taken against Turkey coach Fatih Terim, despite him seeming to come into contact with the fourth official after the Czechs took a 2-0 lead.

“You would need to have something in the referee’s report to note that something has occurred, he said.

“There’s nothing about the coaches.”

So this time around- despite her obvious disinterest in the game- the former Spice Girl wasn’t taking any chances and decided to join David at the match to keep her husbands gaze away from the scantily clad cheerleaders.

Foreign players participating in the IPL (Indian Premier League) may soon find a higher amount being deducted in the form of taxes if the Income Tax department has its way. The I-T department has sent a notice to BCCI asking for copies of all agreements signed between the players and the franchisees.

Twenty20 - cricket’s latest format is making waves in India throught the Indian Premier League. A huge noisy crowd, film stars rooting for their own teams and cheerleaders are reminders of the league’s resounding success. So with everyone sharing the spoils, how can the Income Tax department want to miss the party.

The income tax department has now asked BCCI to furnish details of the tax deductions made while making payments to these players. The income tax department and the BCCI have had a long history of dispute on taxation issues. And even as BCCI is busy milking the IPL cashcow, the I-T department is determined to extract its pound of flesh with what it feels is a purely commercial business venture and not just cricket.

In its notice served to BCCI, the I-T separtment has asked the BCCI to clarify whether TDS at 11.33% has been deducted before releasing the payment
They have also said that since the contract is a long term contract of three years, why should the applicable tax slabs prevailing in the country not be applied, a demand that is supported by tax experts.

BD Gupta, Former Income Tax Commissioner said, “There is no exemption. Whatever money they make they have to pay 11% TDS and after that they also have to file their income tax returns.”

The BCCI is likely to contest this claim on the grounds that the IPL is a short term venture and does not amount to employment.

Meanwhile the service tax department is also investigating whether any of the contracts signed between BCCI and the various franchisees come under the service tax net or not.

Here is my first edition of a mock draft for 2008!

1. Chicago Bulls - Derrick Rose (Memphis)
Beasley seems to be a better fit, as the Bulls need a low-post scorer, but I simply think Derrick Rose is the better player. He’s unstoppable in the open court, and if he ever develops a consistent jumpshot, he looks like a stronger version of Chris Paul (without quite the passing ability). Plus, John Paxson always emphasizes defense, and Derrick Rose has a much higher ceiling as a defender than Michael Beasley.

2. Miami Heat - Michael Beasley (Kansas St.)
Rose is the guy they really want, but Beasley sure is a nice consolation. He’s NBA ready both on the offensive end and rebounding the basketball, and should be able to step into a lineup right away. Beasley will have his struggles on the offensive end, but a trio of Wade-Marion-Beasley would be a real good start in Miami.

3. Minnesota Timberwolves - Brook Lopez (Stanford)
With Lopez, the Timberwolves would be setting themselves up to have one of the best offensive frontlines in the NBA. They already have improving Al Jefferson, and Brook Lopez has great touch around the basket. Lopez does not have great athleticism, but he’s big and is refined in his post moves around the basket. That could warrant a top 3 pick.

4. Seattle Supersonics - Jerryd Bayless (Arizona)
Seattle already had a nice core from last year’s draft, and Bayless would be another great piece. He’s a PG in the mold of a guy like Gilbert Arenas, in that he is really quick off the dribble and is a deadeye shooter. He is 19 and Kevin Durant is 20, so that would be a potent 1-2 combo for years.

5. Memphis Grizzlies - OJ Mayo (USC)
The Grizzlies could go with a big man here, but I like them to go with an off guard in OJ Mayo to create an immensely talented young backcourt, teaming him up with Mike Conley (and then ideally dealing Javaris Crittenton or Kyle Lowry). Mayo has great range on his shot (which makes him a good complement to Conley), but can also score off the dribble, and showed surprising leadership ability in his one year with USC.

6. New York Knicks - Danilo Gallinari (Italy)
According to reports, Gallinari is a 6′10” forward with PG skills. He can handle the ball, create his own shot (either off the drive or with his back to the basket), hit from 3-point range, and he’s a good passer. Sounds like a perfect fit for D’Antoni’s system.

7. Los Angeles Clippers - Russell Westbrook (UCLA)
With the PG position unsettled in LA, Westbrook is a nice fit to stay in town and join the Clippers. While he hasn’t played full-time at PG very much, he showed he has the skills to do it last year. He’s solid handling the ball, he’s a very good passer, and he has the athleticism required. He’s very tough defensively both on the ball and in the passing lanes. He needs to develop a more consistent jump shot, but that was coming along as the year went. With his athleticism, he is great on the fast break.

8. Milwaukee Bucks - Eric Gordon (Indiana)
Gordon is a great scoring combo guard. With Gordon, the Bucks could look to unload Michael Redd and his large contract. Gordon can score in a variety of ways, as he showed by leading the Big 10 in scoring as a freshman.

9. Charlotte Bobcats - Anthony Randolph (LSU)
Looking for more athleticism, the Bobcats can look to young, but very talented and athletic Randolph. He’s in the mold of a Brandan Wright from last year in that he needs to bulk up and improve his midrange game, but he appears to have the talent to do that. He averaged over 15 and 8 in his rookie campaign, and with over 2 blocks per game, showed that his athleticism can allow him to do some things defensively.

10. New Jersey Nets - Kevin Love (UCLA)
With athleticism all around, the Nets can take Love, who provides an NBA ready, polished game. He’ll never be a star because of his athletic limitations, but he’s an extremely intelligent player, great passer, rebounder, and showed a nice jumpshot last season.

11. Indiana Pacers - DJ Augustin (Texas)
The Pacers are really pretty bad at PG, so Augustin is the natural pick here. He’s not the most athletic PG in the draft, but he’s quick enough. He is crafty enough to get his own shot, he’s a very good shooter, and he can get them into their offense and get playmakers the ball (as he showed when he played Kevin Durant). This seems like a logical pick for Indiana if Augustin is still on the board.

12. Sacramento Kings - DeAndre Jordan (Texas A&M)
Jordan is extremely raw, but his athletic ability is too much to pass up. He has a long way to go, as he showed by not having a huge impact in his year at College Station (8 PPG, 6 RPG), but with his great ability, he projects to be a solid scorer, excellent rebounder and shot blocker.

13. Portland Trailblazers - Joe Alexander (West Virginia)
With the Blazers looking to make a run at the playoffs next season, Alexander is a guy that could come in and give them quality minutes right away. He’s not very good defensively, but he has an advanced offensive game and can score in a variety of ways. He’s sneakily athletic, has a great jump shot with lots of range, and showed he can carry a team for stretches.

14. Golden State Warriors - Donte Greene (Syracuse)
Greene looks like a great fit for Nellie ball. He’s a 3/4 combo guy that can stretch the floor with his outside shot. He’s great in the midrange, and shot nearly 35% from downtown in his one season for the Orange. He looks like he could develop into a very solid rebounder with his athleticism and leaping ability, as he averaged over 7 per game. He might not be ready to play a lot of minutes right away, but he should be able to contribute some with his varied skills.

The BCCI on Monday banned off-spinner Harbhajan Singh for 11 matches of the Indian Premier League. The decision was taken at a hearing by DLF Indian Premier league match referee Farokh Engineer.

Harbhajan Singh was accompanied by Lalchand Rajput and Harsha Bhogle whereas Yuvraj Singh and Maxwell came to support Sreesanth. The hearing started at 1PM IST and lasted for 1:30 hours. It took 1 hour after the hearing for the decesion to be made.

Kings XI Punjab termed Harbhajan’s behaviour as unacceptable and against the spirit of the game.

The match referee Farokh Engineer found conclusive evidence about Harbhajan’s guilt and Sreesanth’s innocence. While he banned Harbhajan for 11 IPL matches, no penalty was announced on S Sreesanth. He was let off with a mild warning. The match referee got video footage from 7 angles that proved beyond doubt that Harbhajan slapped Sreesanth without any provocation.

Harbhajan Singh, had carried a letter, which he presented before the commission. He also expressed regretted for his actions which hurt Sreesanth’s feelings.

Harbhajan Singh, now, wont be able to play in any league matches for IPL Mumbai team. It has not been clarified whether the previous match when Bhajji was suspended is part of the 11 games. If it is , it means that technically Harbhajan is eligible to play the semi finals in the event of Mumbai Indians reaching the last 4.

BCCI President Sharad Pawar said that he had told the IPL Chairman if there was prima facie evidence of wrong-doing on the part of any player, the IPL should take immediate action against the player.

Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan Singh and Kings XI paceman S Sreesanth were on Friday involved in a bitter row, following which the fast bowler was seen crying bitterly on the ground at the end of their IPL match here.

The slap left players of both the teams shell-shocked and brought an unsavoury end to the otherwise electrifying IPL match at the PCA Stadium here tonight.

The paceman was seen crying bitterly on the ground at the end of the IPL match, which his team won by 66 runs

It was not the media but policemen on duty who were witness to the shocking and bizarre incident that corroborated the Aussies impression of how misbehaved these two Indian players are.

However, within half an hour of slapping Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh had to apologise for his ‘regretful’ action.

The incident took place immediately after Kings XI Punjab defeated Mumabi Indians and the players were moving back to the dressing room. An infuriated Bhajji not only allegedly picked an argument with temperamental Sreesanth but also delivered a slap on his face. Sreesanth was later seen weeping on the field at the time of the award ceremony.

Immediately after the fracas, Mohali captain Yuvraj Singh walked up to Harbhajan to have a chat with him. Yuvraj said he did not know what transpired between the two. “I do not know what exactly happened but one does not want to see such things happening. IPL commissioner Lalit Modi and ICC’s principal advisor I.S. Bindra also had a word with the off spinner. In the post-match conference, asked if there was an incident involving Sreesanth and him, Harbhajan said: “Can we talk cricket?”

At the end of the day, players shake hands.

The Redskins cheerleaders have promised to deliver an entirely novel form of motivational dance — a blend of traditional all-American cheerleading moves and Indian “Bollywood hip-hop” steps, to add razzmatazz to the IPL.

Lisa Ince choreographing cheerleaders for the Wests Tigers, Melbourne Storm and the St George Illawarra Dragons got a call from Indian Agencies for getting hired as cheerleaders and in an hour it was a done deal.”The 12 cheerleaders, dressed in white tops, red tartan miniskirts and black knee-high boots, hail from Sydney and Melbourne.

“It was just crazy,” Ince said.

She was immediately struck by the reception from the vast Eden Gardens crowd, which included typical wolf-whistling and wild “The girls are just really excited and the crowd is really behind them.”

Melbourne Storm cheerleader Emily Runting said the crowd was “way bigger than the rugby and more noisy”.

“I didn’t know what to expect. It’s huge. It’s exciting,” she said.

Not only cheerleaders from abroad are participating in this league but Indian cheerleaders are also in this race. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings also having there cheerleaders team. Lets see till how much height these cheerleaders gives boost to this game.

In what is arguably the oldest individual honour in the game’s history, Zaheer was joined by West Indians Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ottis Gibson, now England’s bowling coach, and the England pair of Ian Bell and Ryan Sidebottom in the elite list.

All five were rewarded for their performance in the past English season.

The last time an Indian made it to the chart was in 2002 when VVS Laxman was named alongside Andy Flower, Adam Gilchrist, Jason Gillespie and Damien Martyn.

Zaheer was particularly impressive during his stint with Worcestershire.

Meanwhile, South African batting mainstay Jacques Kallis was adjudged the Leading Cricketer in the World for 2007.
